2023 BAFTAs Red Carpet suits were mostly classic and understated. Lots of traditional & extremely smart monochrome. The classic single breasted jackets did appear but this year they were definately out numbered by the come back of the double breasted style suit.
The 2023 BAFTAs were held at The Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank in London. Royal support came in the form of Prince & Princess of Wales, William and Kate. Who both looked amazing in their monochrome outfits. Prince William in black velvet, in my opinion one of the best dressed men of the evening. With Princess Kate looking every inch the Princess in a white Alexander McQueen one shouldered dress finished off with black opera gloves and statement Zara earrings.
You may notice that a lot of the celebrities had blue ribbons on the lapels. The blue ribbons had on them #UN Refugee Agencys this was in support of the UNHCR charity.
2023 BAFTAs classic single breasted Red Carpet suits

Supporting the classic single breasted suit were Colin Farrell, Daryl McCormack and Taron Egerton although each of them styled their suits differently. Colin Farrell chose a Dolce & Gabbana shawl collared style & opted to add a single breasted waistcoat. Daryl McCormack ,in Gucci, added a white batwing bow tie and Taron Egerton just kept it simple. An understated Giorgio Armani SB peak style suit with a classic black bow tie.
Double breasted suits at the 2023 BAFTAs
The dinner suit style of choice winner at the 2023 BAFTAs was, without a doubt, the black double breasted suit. Regardless of the styling of it, it was all about the DB style. With the design of the extra wide jacket lapel being as widely seen on the Red Carpet as the more traditional regular peak collar.
Regular width lapel dinner suit

Classic double breasted suits will always be one of Englands best loved mens dinner suit styles. It often disappears off the scene for a while but always reappears looking as stylish and fresh. The cut of the jacket may change from a lower 6 button cut to a higher 8 button. With the higher cut design being often favoured by taller slimmer men as it is more figure hugging & less forgiving. Over the years it has been teamed up with ultra slim trousers through to extra wide leg ones. It has to be noted that trousers cuts are moving away from the ultra slim cu & heading towards a more traditional or even wide cut.
Wide width lapel dinner suit

The modern twist on the traditional double breasted dinner suit is to have an extra wide lapel. Best Actor winner for 'Elvis', Austin Butler wore an extra wide lapel Alexander McQueen dinner suit. I believe the same Gucci suit as he wore to the Golden Globes earlier on this year. For the Golden Globes he teamed his look up with a large 'bat wing' bow tie but for the 2023 BAFTA's chose a classic size bow. Paul Mescal also chose Gucci for his Red Carpet tuxedo. He accessorised his look with a small narrow bow tie and lapel brooch by Cartier. Jamie Darnan opted for a ribbon edged black wide lapel dinner suit with a black tie.
Jacquard dinner suits

Jacquard fabric dinner suits are a great way of introducing some texture and interest in to a dinner suit but in a very subtle way. Making his film debut Austrian actor Felix Kammerer selected a black jacquard tuxedo with an open necked black shirt for his first Red Carpet appearance. Radio 1Xtra DJ Jeremiah Asiamah certainly had it all on his jacquard suit. A wide shawl lapel with ribbon edge trim, jacquard fabric in to his jacket and a wide 'bat wing' bow tie. The middle picture is of one of our Anthony formal wear Grooms in his made-to-measure jacquard dinner suit for his wedding.
White dinner suits

White dinner suits were also well supported at the 2023 BAFTAs. Starting off with one of the hosts for the evening Richard E Grant. Richard wore a shawl collared dinner suit with a matching bow tie, the designer has not been announced on this suit.
Martin Freeman opted for a more classic double breasted style by designer Paul Smith, it had a classic peak lapel. Martin finished off this very traditional look with a classic black bow tie.
Dylan Llewellyn also wore a white suit (designed unknown). I'm not sure about this one though. The designer went for patch pockets, which in my opinion look to casual for a dinner suit and a notch collar, which again I'm not a fan of for a dinner suit. But don't get me wrong. I like a notch collar & it is unusual & different on a dinner suit, but, I'm affraid ,for me personally it's a no. Having said all that, although not to my taste it was different & that's what fashion is all about!
The velvet dinner suit

Having a velvet jacket can add a real luxurious look and feel to your dinner suit. There's something about velvet that makes the wearer have an understated air of elegance. This subtle twist on a black dinner suit can be designed in any style.
Single breasted as per 'Best Supporting Actor' Ke Huy Quan chose. Finishing off his look with a black shirt, black bow tie and Cartier 'flower' brooch. Alternatively James Floyd opted for a burgundy velvet dinner suit. A double breasted style with a wide shawl collar and chinese knot fastenings.
I have to say my personal winner of best male 'Suit of the Night' goes to the Prince of Wales, William. I love his black double breasted dinner suit. Trimmed with a black piping detail his wide lapel double breasted style was 'bang on point'. His suit enabled him to show off his young fashion side whilst still looking regal and elegant.
Doing something different at the 2023 BAFTAs...

Doing something slightly different was Paul Rogers. Winner of the 'Best Editing' award for the film 'Everything Everywhere All At Once'. Paul was the wearer of a blue dinner suit with a black satin shawl collar which matched up with his black hand-tied bow tie.
Going for something completely different, that came down to two gentlemen at the 2023 BAFTAs. Firstly, Barry Keoghan who rocked a bright scarlet red Alexander McQueen double breasted, wide lapel dinner suit. Designed with slightly looser fitting than we have seen worn for the last few years, with slim but not skinny trousers. His look was finished off with a white shirt with a scarlet red collar & cuffs and a pair of patent boots.
I have to say that the Alexander McQueen tuxedo jumpsuit worn by Eddie Redmayne at the 2023 BAFTAs was a first for me. This wide leg double breasted jumpsuit complete with peak lapels and finished off (or not) without a shirt was certainly different. Although us girls having been enjoying the jumpsuit revival for the last few years. Do I class it as high fashion, yes I love the original concept of designers and the fact that they can get coverage of new ideas & design possibilities. Do I think I will ever seen any of my customers wearing a tuxedo jumpsuit, that answer is a simple no!
